Down

Down

They are talking about it again, about

Shutting down the government, and

It is something about a budget, but nothing,

Nothing about him, that soldier, just home,

After a year on the ground in Afghanistan,

Where he fought because they told him to,

And nothing about a wife, who has to do this,

Who has to stand here, stand and watch him,

Her husband, stare at the screen of a television

With blank eyes, or watch him as he walks back

And forth in their backyard, this cadence in gra*s,

Or watch him as he lies, as he lies next to her,

In their bed, pretending that he knows how, how

To do this now, how to do this with nothing now,

No paycheck and no job and no way, with no way

To tell himself that he matters.
